His participation in "An International Survey of Recent Painting and Sculpture" at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, where he represented Canada, is a highlight of his international acclaim.

Between 1985 and 1995, Tomkins significantly impacted the New Zealand art scene as a senior lecturer in painting at the University of Canterbury. His approach to painting, marked by a harmonious blend of abstraction and figuration, intellect and emotion, theory and practice, left a lasting influence on a new generation of New Zealand painters, including Shane Cotton and Seraphine Pick.

His work offers a refreshing divergence from the austerity of Minimalism and Conceptualism, incorporating non-Western perspectives on life and a spiritual dialogue within each canvas.

This collaboration further exemplifies his ability to bridge different artistic disciplines, underscoring his legacy as a multifaceted and influential figure in the art world.
